Diagnosis for a King

نویسنده

  • Russell Barton
چکیده

Barton reviews a book based on extensive medical/historical detective work which suggests that the King suffered from a rare physical illness which baffled his doctors and made his later life a misery. a common cause of discoloration of urine is inges-tion of rhubarb and senna, drugs frequently administered to George III during his illness. A rare cause is porphyria. A common form of 'madness' is manic-depressive psychosis (and elation is by no means essential to the diagnosis?as asserted on Page 359?a mood of hostile, suspicious self-confidence is probably more common). A complication of the rare illness, porphyria, is a mental disorder characterised by clouding of conscious with agitation (occurring together these cardinal features of organic mental disorder present as delirium) memory loss, emotional lability and so forth. It is most unlikely, but not impossible, that George III suffered from porphyria. By now the authors have convinced themselves, the superstitious literary world and a fair proportion of the medical profession, that porphyria, a rare men-delian dominant disorder of metabolism, accounts for his illness.
